ELEGY FOR MR COGITO: There's a rather splendid column on public intellectuals in Britain by one of today's best British public intellectuals, Tim Garton Ash, in today's Gaurdian. I'm always happy when people assert that 'British intellectual' is not an oxymoron, since it means I may not be out of a job yet. But the highlight of the column is probably Garton Ash's tribute to Jacek Kuron, and account of Kuron's funeral: moving, inspiring stuff, which for me at least was actually spine-tingling.
